What's up with this website?

Well, modern websites are kinda boring with their static looking images, flat designs, pastel colors and simplistic "professional" graphics. Aren't you kinda tired of them? Well I am, that's why this site is inspired by the Web 1.0.

I feel that in the 90's and early 2000's the internet had a lot more personality, a time before social media where people made their own websites and hosted them on services like Geocities.

Having your own website felt a lot more accessible, learning HTML wasn't that hard, there weren't things like CSS and Javascript was in its infancy, so ordinary people would have their own websites which usually were about the things they loved and reflected their own personalities.

Now, don't get me wrong, technology-wise, the internet now is incredible, the possibilities and things you could potentially build with what's available now is mind-blowing.

Which makes it more of a shame that the internet ended up consolidated in the hands of a handful of giant corporations and social media profiles are what represent us online, which all look the same aside from the profile pictures and the banner on the top. No personality, no self-expression.

On top of that we have the algorithms that are designed to keep us glued to our screens, steal our time, attention and are geared towards making us more angry because that's the emotion that creates the most engagement.

This makes for a very toxic environment online, gone are the days that your website was a digital extension of who you are. Websites also required more effort to update which wouldn't allow people to express themselves in the heat of the moment thus making them focus more on stuff they liked.

Not saying there wasn't toxicity back then and horrible content back then, absolutely there was, but it was less common, less accessible and it wasn't forced on us by a feed.

So, there it is, the reason my website is designed the way it is. I didn't mean for this to become a rant, but there you go.

With that in mind, make sure to try this website out on your retro computer running an old browser such as Netscape 4 as it's 100% compatible with those browsers. In fact, it's a retro-first website, which means that instead of having a mode for old browsers, it loads enhancements when in modern browsers.
